Pagal Baba built this temple, hence this temple is known by his name. Interesting story of Pagal Baba Mandir.
Pagal Baba Temple, Vrindavan is known for its miraculous story which is related to a poor Brahmin. It is said that a poor brahmin was a great devotee of Lord Krishna, he used to chant only the name of Lord Krishna all the time. Whatever income he got, he was living his life considering the will of God and he was very happy with his day-to-day life.

Once the Brahmin needed some money, so he went to the moneylender of the city to get money. The moneylender gave the money to the Brahmin and said that the money should be given on time. The Brahmin had started paying the amount of money as installments every month but when it was time to pay the last installment, the moneylender sent a court notice to the Brahmin.

It was written in the notice of the court that due to non-payment of money, the brahmin will have to come to the court or pay the amount with interest. The poor brahmin was very surprised to know all this and when he talked to the moneylender about it, the moneylender also refused to listen to him. The brahmin requested him many times that he should not cheat with him, but the moneylender remained adamant on his point. Even when the matter reached the court, Brahmin said that he had paid the entire amount leaving one installment.

Change of heart of the judge.
The judge told the brahmin that you have any proof that you have paid money to the moneylender. There is such a person in front of whom you gave money to the moneylender. Hearing the judge’s words, the Brahmin got into a little thought and told him that I have paid the money, the witness is my lord Banke Bihari, he was with me all the time when I gave Installment. Brahmin said that only Banke Bihari will testify in my favor. After listening to the brahmin, the judge gave a letter in the name of Banke Bihari and said that your Banke Bihari will have to come to the court to testify.

The Brahmin took the letter and put it in front of Bihari Ji in the temple of Banke Bihari and said Lord, tomorrow you have to come to the court and save the shame of your devotee. The next day, when the witness was asked to be called in the court, an old man came there and told his name as Banke Bihari and said that when the poor Brahmin gave money, I used to be with him. The old person told that on which date the Brahmin had given how much money and when the books were checked, it was seen that exactly the same amount of money was deposited on that date but the name was written of a fake person.

The judge ruled in favor of the Brahmin and proved the Brahmin innocent. The moneylender did not understand how all this happened, what he only knew, was how did the old man know. The judge was also surprised that how could such an old man remember the date accurately?

Later the judge asked the brahmin who was the old man who had come to testify and the brahmin said that he is my Banke Bihari who could not stop himself from seeing the devotee in trouble and came. Still, when the judge’s curiosity was not over, he went to the temple of Banke Bihari and inquired about that old man, then the priest told him that whenever we get a letter in the name of God. We put it in front of Bihari Ji and the Lord does his justice. The judge had come to know about all the pastimes of Lord Krishna. And after that his whole life also changed.

He regretted that Lord Krishna himself had come before him and he could not recognize him. After this he left the post of judge and started wandering in search of Krishna, after years when he came to Vrindavan, people started calling him by the name of Pagal Baba. Later he himself got this temple built and it was here that he devoted his whole life to the service of Krishna.
