Who built the Golden Temple?

The beginning of Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) was started in 1577 by Ram Das, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, and was founded by the fifth Guru, Arjun Dash. The construction of the temple began in 1581, it took eight years to complete the first version of the temple.

The temple was demolished in 1762 after a long dispute between Sikhs and Muslims. The construction of a new main entrance, passage, and sanctum was completed in 1776, while the work of the pool around the pond was finished in 1784.

Ranjit Singh announced that he would rebuild it with marble and gold. The temple was renovated in 1809 in marble and copper, and in 1830 Ranjit Singh donated gold to furnish the sanctum sanctorum with a gold plate.

The Golden Temple is sacred and worshipped because in this temple the holy book of Sikhs, Adi Granth, has been established. The Sikhs had ten gurus and this Adi Granth is considered to be the last and eternal living Guru of the Sikhs.
