Where Kankali Devi Temple is today, earlier there were 26 Hindu temples that were destroyed by foreign Muslim invaders. Now, out of 26 temples, only 2 temples are in good condition, one is a Kankali devi temple and the other is of Khadag wali devi (Lord Durga), the rest of the 24 temples have broken parts still present today. This place is also known by the names Tigwa, Tigawa Tigma and Tigwan. By looking at the Kankali devi temple and Goddess Durga (Kadag wali devi) existing here, you can see the unique art style of our times. Apart from this, there are 24 temples that have been destroyed, you will be shocked to see them. The facades of the broken temples are so beautiful and their design is so attractive that the question arises in the mind whether such beautiful craftsmanship was possible even at that time when there was no machinery present in that time.

History of Tigawa (Tigma) and Kankali Devi Temple
Tigwa is a small village near the place named Bahoriband in the Katni district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Local people call this village by the name of Tigma or Tigwan. Today’s small village was under the rulers of the Gupta dynasty in ancient times and their rule used to run here. In this village, 26 Hindu temples were built by the Gupta rulers in the 5th century (400–425 AD). In all the temples, the stone was carved and their design and construction were so amazing that even in today’s era, there is no such thing possible as a so beautiful temple. In the temple idols and statues of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, Goddess Kali, Goddess Ganga, Seshnagh, Lord Ganesh, and other deities were made. You can get an idea of the advanced and developed handicrafts of that time by looking at the Gods, Goddesses, and all other figures engraved on the stones and walls of the temples.

But unfortunately, out of these 26 temples, now only 2 temples are present in proper condition, the rest of the 24 temples have only ruins and broken parts left. This happened because, after the end of the Gupta dynasty, other state dynasties and foreign invaders attacked and damaged these temples. Especially the Mughals and other Muslim invaders are considered to be the reason for the destruction of these temples.
