Ghughwa Fossil National Park, located in Shahpura block of Dindori district, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most unique natural heritage sites in India. Spread across nearly 75 acres, this park offers a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric era when the continents of today were once connected. The fossils found here are estimated to be between 65 million to 180 million years old, serving as evidence of the Earth’s evolutionary history and past climate changes.
Walking through this park feels like traveling millions of years back in time, to an age when giant plants and long-extinct species flourished on Earth. It is not only important scientifically but also holds immense value for tourism and education.

History of Ghughwa Fossil Park

The history of this park is both intriguing and significant. The fossils were first discovered in 1970 by Dr. Dharmendra Prasad, who was then serving as a statistical officer in Mandla district. He noticed some unusually shaped stones in this area and sent them for examination to the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany, Lucknow. The tests revealed that these were not ordinary stones but fossils of ancient trees and plants dating back millions of years.
The discovery astonished the scientific community, and in 1983, this site was declared a National Fossil Park. Since then, the fossils have been systematically preserved and opened for public viewing. Today, it is one of the few places in India where natural history is recorded so vividly.
The park preserves around 182 species of plant fossils, including remains of palm, coconut, teak, eucalyptus, and bamboo trees. Remarkably, the presence of eucalyptus fossils indicates that India and Australia were once connected as part of the Gondwana supercontinent.
