Nestled in the serene, nature-rich hilly region of Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh, Kundalpur is not just a religious site but an extraordinary confluence of Jain faith, history, and architecture. Also known as Kundalgiri and Bade Baba Mandir, this sacred place is a complex of 63 temples of the Digambar Jain tradition, spread across both the foothills and hilltops. The prime attraction here is the ancient idol of Lord Adinath (Rishabhdev), lovingly referred to as Bada Baba by devotees. This Tirth is also renowned as a Siddha Kshetra, as per tradition, where the last Keval Jnani, Shridhar Kevali, attained Moksha. Every year, lakhs of devotees visit Kundalpur, especially during grand celebrations like the Mahamastakabhishek and Panchkalyanak Mahotsav. With its lush greenery, tranquil lakes, stairways leading up the hills, and a series of majestic temples, Kundalpur offers an atmosphere where one’s heart naturally drifts into deep spiritual bliss.

History
The religious significance of Kundalpur dates back several centuries. Historical and mythological accounts suggest that this area has been a place of intense meditation for Jain monks since ancient times. Archaeological evidence and tradition indicate that the main Jain temple (Bada Baba Mandir) existed as early as the 8th–9th century CE. Although the temple faced the ravages of time, its spiritual prominence never diminished. During the medieval period, the temples underwent renovation and reconstruction under the patronage of Jain Bhattarakas. Among them, Bhattaraka Surendrakirti and Bundela ruler Chhatrasal played an important role. In modern times, under the guidance of Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj, a grand reconstruction of the Bada Baba temple began in 1997. The work continued for several years, and on 17 January 2006, the ancient idol was ceremoniously reinstalled in the newly built sanctum. In February 2022, the temple witnessed a historic Panchkalyanak Pratishtha Mahotsav and Mahamastakabhishek, attended by lakhs of devotees. The temple complex came alive with colorful decorations, grand processions (Shobha Yatras), Gajarath Feri, and devotional music.

Temple Architecture
The main Bada Baba temple of Kundalpur is an outstanding example of the ancient Indian Nagara-style architecture. Constructed with stone and marble, it features intricate carvings, towering spires, and grand mandapas. The main sections of the temple include:
- Garbha Griha (Sanctum Sanctorum) – Housing the idol of Bada Baba, the sanctum offers a serene and devotional ambiance.
- Gudha Mandapa – From here, devotees can have a direct view of the sanctum.
- Nritya Mandapa – Adorned with massive pillars, this mandapa is a stunning specimen of artistic craftsmanship.
- Sahasrakuta Jinalaya – A shrine with numerous beautiful idols of Jain Tirthankaras.
The temple complex is designed with a Jal-Vyuha (water enclosure) for sanctity and security. To reach the hilltop temples, devotees climb about 400 steps, flanked by ancient idols and smaller shrines. For those unable to climb, doli (palanquin) services are available.
