History and Establishment
The Central Museum was initially established in 1923 as an institution named Navaratna Mandir under the Holkar State during the reign of King Tukojirao III. The institution aimed to collect photographs and documents of notable personalities and included a library.

In 1929, scattered ancient relics from across the state were collected and displayed, leading to its declaration as the Central Museum. Initially located on M.G. Road (now known as Devlalikar Gallery), the museum was shifted to its current building in 1965.
