History of Keoti Fort
Keoti Fort was constructed by Raja Parmal Dev in the year 1500 AD. This fort is also mentioned in the accounts of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. During the rebellion, Thakur Ranmat Singh of Rewa sought refuge in this fort. He killed a British officer who had come to arrest him. Eventually, under the persuasion of Maharaja Raghuraj Singh, who supported the British, Ranmat Singh surrendered. In 1860, he was executed for the murder of a British officer.

The main entrance is located on the eastern side. The outer walls have openings with three angles of fire, allowing defenders to fend off enemy attacks. Covering an area of about 1 hectare, the fort is built with stone and mortar, reflecting an impressive architectural style.

Current Status and Controversies
In 2016, the Madhya Pradesh government declared Keoti Fort a “protected heritage site” and transferred it to the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board with plans to develop it as a heritage hotel. However, despite the tender issued in July 2021, the fort has yet to be fully developed. Reports suggest that the fort remains dilapidated and, due to neglect, has become a gathering spot for petty criminals, which could deter tourists.
