History and Mythology

The Gabinath Shiv Temple is associated with the Treta Yuga and is located in Birsinghpur, a small town in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. It is believed that in the Treta Yuga, this place was known as Devpur and was ruled by King Veer Singh, a devout follower of Lord Mahakal (Shiva). Regularly, the king would travel to Ujjain to worship Mahakal. In his old age, he shared his difficulties with Mahakal, who appeared in his dreams and promised to give him darshan (appearance) in Devpur itself.

At that time, a Shivaling (symbol of Shiva) emerged from the hearth of a resident, Gavi Yadav, but was repeatedly buried by Gavi’s mother. Eventually, Mahakal appeared again in King Veer Singh’s dream, explaining that he wanted to manifest from the earth, but Gavi’s mother prevented it. The king then visited Gavi’s home and built a grand temple where the Shivaling was emerging, establishing Lord Shiva as Gabinath, considered a form of Mahakal. Thus, the Gabinath Temple gained immense spiritual significance in the region.

Aurangzeb’s Failed Attack

In 1704, the Mughal invader Aurangzeb, notorious for destroying Hindu temples, arrived at the Gabinath Temple with his army. However, despite multiple attempts, neither Aurangzeb nor his soldiers could damage the temple or the Shivling. According to local historians, when Aurangzeb struck the Shivling with his sword, it did not break. His soldiers were ordered to use hammers and chisels, and during their strikes, extraordinary events occurred—milk, honey, blood, and Ganga water flowed from the Shivling in succession. On the fifth strike, a bee swarm attacked Aurangzeb’s army, forcing them to flee for their lives.

Even today, the Shivling at Gabinath Dham bears the marks of these attacks, and a fragmented Shivling is worshipped at this temple. Unlike other Hindu temples, where broken idols are not worshipped, Gabinath Dham is unique as it is the only temple where a fractured Shivling is revered, holding significant importance across the Hindu faith.

Religious Importance

The Gabinath Dham holds a prominent place in the Vindhya region. Local beliefs suggest that the pilgrimage to the four Dhams (Hindu sacred pilgrimage sites) is considered incomplete without offering water from the Dhams to Lord Gabinath. While the temple is always bustling with devotees, the numbers swell into the thousands during the months of Sawan and on the occasion of Mahashivratri, when devotees come to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

It is also said that no one knows how deep the Shivling at the Gabinath Temple extends underground, adding to the temple’s mystical aura.
