The Unique Features of Shabri Waterfall (Tulsi Waterfall)

Shabri Waterfall is a lovely spring located at the starting point of the Mandakini River, near the village of Jamunihai, about 8 kilometers south of Markundi town. What makes this waterfall special is its unique characteristic where one stream flows underneath another, creating a mesmerizing natural phenomenon. Just below the waterfall lies a deep reservoir known as the Mandakini Kund, which adds to the area’s beauty.

Shabri Falls has been renamed ‘Tulsi Falls’

the name of Shabri Waterfall in Chitrakoot has been officially changed to “Tulsi Waterfall.” This change took place on July 22, 2022, and has sparked protests, particularly from the local Kol tribal community, who consider the previous name significant to their heritage. According to local legends, the waterfall was named after Shabri, a woman from their community who served Lord Rama during his exile. The Kol community feels that renaming the waterfall erases part of their cultural and historical identity.

On the other hand, officials have stated that the name change was made because Shabri Waterfall held no special historical significance under its previous name.

Discovery and Naming of Shabri Waterfall (Tulsi Waterfall)

During one of his visits, this beautiful waterfall was discovered on July 31st, 1998, by the then-District Magistrate of Chitrakoot, Sri Jagannath Singh. He named the waterfall “Shabari Fall,” dedicating it to the legendary devotee Shabari from the Ramayana. Since its discovery, the waterfall has become a significant tourist and religious site in Chitrakoot.

The Mandakini Kund

Adjacent to the waterfall is a large water reservoir known as Mandakini Kund. This deep pool of water, located just below the waterfall, enhances the scenic beauty of the area and is a popular spot for visitors to relax and enjoy the tranquil environment.

How to Reach Shabri Waterfall, Chitrakoot:

To visit the scenic Shabri Waterfall, follow these travel options based on your starting point:

1. By Air:

The closest airport is Khajuraho Airport, situated around 175 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Chitrakoot.
Another option is to fly into Allahabad (Prayagraj) Airport, which is approximately 115 km from Chitrakoot. After landing, you can opt for a taxi or bus to reach the town.

2. By Train:

The nearest railway station is Chitrakoot Dham Karwi, located about 10-12 km from the waterfall. This station is well-connected with major cities like Allahabad, Varanasi, and Jhansi.
From the station, taxis, autos, and local buses are readily available to take you to Shabri Waterfall.

3. By Road:

From Chitrakoot Town: Shabari Waterfall is just 8-10 km away from the main town of Chitrakoot. You can hire a private taxi or use local transportation like auto-rickshaws to reach the spot.
Bus Services: Regular state-run and private buses connect Chitrakoot to nearby cities like Allahabad (115 km), Satna (80 km), and Varanasi (240 km). Once you arrive at Chitrakoot, you can hire a taxi or an auto to reach the waterfall.

4. From Nearby Locations:

If you’re coming from Markundi, the waterfall is around 8 km south. You can take a local bus or hire a taxi to reach the destination.

5. Walking:

Once you reach the nearest road access, you’ll likely need to walk a short distance to the waterfall, which is set in a more remote and natural environment.

It’s advisable to visit the waterfall during daylight hours. If traveling during the monsoon season, wear comfortable footwear, as the terrain can be slippery due to the rains.
