Historical Significance of the Fort

The Kalinjar Fort gained prominence under the rule of the Chandela dynasty, which governed the region between the 8th and 13th centuries. During the reign of King Yashovarman, the fort became a significant defensive site. The high walls, fortified structures, and watchtowers were specifically built to deter foreign invaders. In 1023 AD, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the fort but was reportedly intimidated by the sheer size of the Chandela army inside.

The fort has been ruled by various kings and sultans over time, including Qutb-ud-din Aibak, Iltutmish, and Alauddin Khalji. In 1544, Sher Shah Suri attacked and captured the fort but died due to an explosion during the siege. Later, the fort was handed over as a jagir (fief) to Raja Birbal, a courtier of Emperor Akbar. Over time, the fort was reclaimed by the Rajputs and Bundelas.

Architectural Features

The fort stands at an altitude of 700 feet on the Vindhya mountain range. Its high, imposing walls display the fort’s robustness and strength. Various architectural styles, such as Gupta, Pratihara, and Panchayatana Nagar styles, can be observed here. The three temples within the fort are constructed with a precise arithmetic method, reflecting advanced architectural knowledge. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple within Kalinjhar Fort is regarded as its most sacred site. According to legend, after consuming the poison from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), Lord Shiva rested here. Resting Place of Sita

Inside the fort is a beautiful rock formation with a bed and pillow carved on it, known as “Sita Sej” or the resting place of Goddess Sita. According to ancient legends, it is considered the resting place of Sita Mata (Goddess Sita). Adjacent to this is a pond known as “Sita Kund,” where bathing is believed to cure skin and other severe ailments.
