
Shankaracharya Temple is an ancient temple located in Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir state of India, this temple is more than 200 years old. This temple was built by King Gopadatya of Kashmir, hence this temple was called Gopadari temple after his name. When Adi Guru Shankaracharya stayed at this temple during his visit to Kashmir, this temple was named Shankaracharya. This temple is located in the Shankara Charya mountain of Kashmir, also known as the Gopadri mountain. The height of this temple is 1100 feet above sea level. Due to being at such a height, it is also called Takht-a-Sulaiman. This temple is also called Paspahad.

History of Shankaracharya Temple

If we talk about the history of the temple, then this temple dates back to 371 BC and it was built by King Gopadatya of Kashmir, it is believed that Gopadatya was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. This temple was built entirely of stones. Jagat Guru Shankaracharya, who was a philosopher and great religious guru, stayed at the Shankaracharya temple during his visit to Kashmir. Shankaracharya had meditated and penanced here for a long time, even today his place of residence remains here, whose devotees people visit. After some time the name of this temple was changed to Shankaracharya Temple.

The temple did not have good stairs, so sometime after the construction of the temple, Maharaja Gulab Singh of Dogra got the stairs constructed in the temple for the convenience of the devotees. It is an ancient temple as well as an Indian archaeological heritage. Earlier this temple did not have an electricity facility. In 1925, an electricity facility was made in the temple.

By Air: Srinagar International Airport is the nearest airport to Shankaracharya temple. Shankaracharya temple is 18km away from here. This airport is well connected to other important cities like Jammu, New Delhi, Mumbai, Leh, Amritsar, and Bangalore. From the airport, you can reach Shankaracharya temple by taking a bus or taxi.
