Sohawal Fort, located in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh, is a historical monument reflecting a bygone era’s grandeur and heritage. This fort is tied to the glorious past of Sohawal State, a former princely state under the Bagelkhand Agency of British India. In 1901, Sohawal State covered around 552 square kilometers and had a population of 32,216. The capital of this state was the small town of Sohawal, home to about 2,108 residents at the time.

The History of Sohawal State

Sohawal State was established in the mid-16th century by Fateh Singh, the second son of Maharaja Amar Singh of Rewa. After rebelling against his father, Fateh Singh founded an independent state here. Though the state originally covered a large area, it lost much of its territory over the centuries, yet retained its significance. In the early 19th century, Sohawal became a British protectorate, initially under the jurisdiction of Panna State. In 1809, a separate sanad (charter) was granted to Rais Aman Singh, officially recognizing Sohawal’s independent administrative status.

Due to an interregnum between 1830 and 1833, Sohawal came under direct British administration. Finally, on January 1, 1950, the last ruler of Sohawal signed the accession papers, merging the state with the Indian Union and marking its inclusion into independent India.

Architecture and Present Condition of the Fort

Sohawal Fort, though now in ruins, displays remarkable Bundelkhandi architectural styles from its era. Its sturdy walls and towering structures echo the fort’s former glory. The fort was divided into two sections, with its northern portion forming enclaves amidst the surrounding territories of Panna State.
