History
The construction of the Nohleshwar Temple dates back to the 10th century, during the time of the Kalachuri dynasty. It is believed that Queen Nohla Devi, wife of King Yuvarajdev I, commissioned this magnificent temple. Hence, the village came to be known as Nohta, and the temple was named Nohleshwar.
Historians suggest that the temple was not only a place of worship but also a cultural and social center, where rituals, gatherings, and various festivals were organized. British archaeologists discovered the temple in ruins in the late 19th century. Later, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertook its preservation and partial reconstruction, reviving its grandeur.
There is also a belief that this temple was once a part of the “City of 108 Shiva Shrines”. Over time, most of them disappeared, but Nohleshwar still stands proudly in all its glory.
Architecture
Nohleshwar Temple is built in the Nagara style of architecture, which is one of the finest examples of ancient temple construction in Central India.
- The temple is constructed on a high plinth (Jagati) about 6 feet in height and nearly 100 feet long.
- Its towering Shikhara (spire) seems to touch the sky, making it majestic from a distance.
- It consists of a Mukha Mandapa (porch), Sabha Mandapa (assembly hall), Antaral (vestibule), and Garbha Griha (sanctum).
