Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary Indore

Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the outskirts of Indore, is a beautiful and rich wildlife reserve. This sanctuary is not only a unique spot for nature lovers but also a hub of attraction for adventure and trekking enthusiasts.

Establishment and History

Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1989. It is named “Ralamandal” due to the abundance of “Ral” trees in the area. Historically, this site was known as a hunting ground for the Holkar dynasty. The trails and some historical monuments related to hunting can still be seen here.

Geographical Location and Area

This sanctuary is situated about 20 kilometers from Indore city. It spans an area of 5 square kilometers and is located at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. The hills and greenery of the sanctuary add to its charm.

Flora and Fauna

Flora:

The sanctuary predominantly features trees like teak, shisham, bamboo, and ral. Additionally, the grasslands here are quite attractive.

Fauna:

A variety of birds and animals can be spotted here. Key wildlife includes leopards, blackbucks, chital, nilgai, wild boars, and hares. Bird species include peacocks, parrots, hawks, and woodpeckers.

  2. Cycling: Special paths for cycling are available within the sanctuary, offering a unique experience in the lap of nature.

  4. Historic Hunting Lodge: A hunting lodge built by the Holkar dynasty is located here, which is famous as a historical heritage site.
  5. Bird Watching: The sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers. Migratory birds flock here during the winter season.

  • Entry Fee:
    • Indian Visitors: ₹30 per person
    • Children: ₹15 per person
    • Cycling Fee: ₹50
    • Camera Fee: ₹50 extra (₹200 for DSLRs)
  • Timings:
    • Open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Closed on Mondays)

How to Reach

  1. By Air: The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (Indore), located about 25 kilometers from Ralamandal.
  2. By Rail: Indore Railway Station is about 20 kilometers from the sanctuary. Taxis or autos can be used to reach the sanctuary.
  3. By Road: Buses and taxis are easily available from Indore to Ralamandal. It is situated on the Indore-Khandwa road.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Ralamandal is between October and March. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the chances of spotting wildlife are higher.
