Since ancient times, this sacred site has been a major pilgrimage spot for devotees of Lord Shiva. A fascinating legend from the British era is linked with this temple. During the Afghan War, an English officer, Lieutenant Colonel Martin, was sent to the battlefield. His wife prayed at Baba Baijnath’s shrine, vowing that if her husband returned safely, she would renovate the temple. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself, in the guise of a yogi, protected Colonel Martin and granted him victory. When he returned unharmed, his wife fulfilled her promise and got the temple renovated in 1883. महत्वपूर्ण रहा है। मंदिर से जुड़ी एक अत्यंत रोचक घटना भी प्रचलित है। अंग्रेज़ी शासनकाल के दौरान अफगानिस्तान युद्ध में लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल मार्टिन नामक अंग्रेज अफसर को भेजा गया। उनकी पत्नी ने बाबा बैजनाथ से मनोकामना की कि यदि उनके पति सुरक्षित लौट आएँगे तो वे मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार करवाएँगी। मान्यता है कि युद्ध में स्वयं भगवान शिव योगी का रूप धारण कर कर्नल मार्टिन की रक्षा के लिए उपस्थित हुए और उन्हें विजयी बनाया। जब कर्नल मार्टिन सकुशल लौटे तो उनकी पत्नी ने वचन निभाते हुए सन् 1883 में मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण कराया। मंदिर में आज भी इस घटना का शिलालेख मौजूद है। यह कहानी इस मंदिर की महत्ता को और भी Emperor Vikramaditya requested the goddess to end this practice. When the goddess didn’t respond, he created a human effigy made of sweets and offered it as bhog (food) to the deity. Pleased, the goddess accepted the offering, and Vikramaditya requested that she remain on the opposite side of the river. Since then, the goddess has never demanded human sacrifice, and the temple was constructed in her honor.
