तथा शिवभक्ति के कारण विशेष प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त करता है। स्थानीय लोग इसे “बैजनाथ धाम” भी कहते हैं। यहां पहुंचते ही भक्तों को एक अलौकिक शांति और दिव्यता का अनुभव होता है। ऊँचे-ऊँचे वृक्षों, नदी के किनारे से मनोकामना की कि यदि उनके पति सुरक्षित लौट आएँगे तो वे मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार करवाएँगी। मान्यता है कि युद्ध में स्वयं भगवान शिव योगी का रूप धारण कर कर्नल मार्टिन की रक्षा के लिए उपस्थित हुए और उन्हें विजयी बनाया। जब कर्नल मार्टिन सकुशल लौटे तो उनकी पत्नी ने वचन निभाते हुए सन् 1883 में मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण कराया। मंदिर में आज भी इस घटना का शिलालेख मौजूद है। यह कहानी इस मंदिर की महत्ता को और भी Ujjain, often referred to as the astronomical capital of India, has been an important center for science, astrology, and spirituality since ancient times. The Jantar Mantar or Vedh Shala of Ujjain is not only a historical site but also a remarkable achievement of Indian astronomy. In ancient India, Ujjain was considered the base point for time calculation and calendar-making. The reason was its location on the Prime Meridian of India (Zero Longitude line). Just like Greenwich in London is taken as the global reference for time today, Ujjain was once known as the Greenwich of India. Mahakal Lok Corridor Ujjain: A Divine Blend of Grandeur, Faith & Spirituality Even today, this observatory reminds us that centuries before the rise of modern science in the West, Indian scholars and astronomers were already mastering complex astronomical studies and time calculations. History The Jantar Mantar of Ujjain was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur (1688–1743). Apart from being a great ruler, Jai Singh was deeply interested in mathematics and astronomy. During his time, inconsistencies in Panchang (Hindu calendar) and astronomical calculations had increased. Different scholars provided varying times for eclipses, seasons, and religious rituals, which often created confusion. To resolve this issue, Jai Singh decided to build observatories equipped with instruments that could measure planetary movements and time with precision. The construction was completed around 1725 AD.
