The history of Mangalnath Temple is deeply rooted in ancient legends and mythology. It is said that once Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Andhakasura in a fierce battle. During the fight, drops of sweat fell from ShivaтАЩs body onto the Earth, and at that very spot, a radiant Shivlinga manifested. This sacred Shivlinga came to be known as Mangalnath.
According to belief, Mars (Mangal Grah) originated from this very place, which is why the temple is regarded as the birthplace of Mars. Special rituals and worship for the removal of Mangal Dosh are performed here. Ancient scriptures also describe Ujjain as the most important place for astrology and planetary studies.
Historians point out that during the reign of King Vikramaditya, Ujjain was a renowned center of astronomy and mathematics.
