The temple is particularly special due to its natural water abhishekam—a stream of water continuously flows over the Shivlinga from a Gomukh (a stone carved in the shape of a cow’s mouth), all year round. It is considered one of the major natural abhishek sites in Madhya Pradesh.

History of the Temple – Mythology, Architecture, and Royal Patronage

Mythological Significance
According to ancient Hindu legends, this sacred site was once the tapobhumi (land of penance) of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Garuda performed intense penance here to please Lord Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva manifested himself as a Swayambhu Shivlinga (self-manifested lingam) at this spot. Hence, it is also known as Garuda Teerth.

Architecture and Original Structure
The original structure of the temple is believed to date back to the 7th–8th century, during the reign of the Paramara dynasty in Central India. The Paramaras were known for their patronage of religion and the arts. The stone carvings and sculptures in the temple reflect the high architectural style of that era.

The temple is an excellent example of monolithic rock-cut architecture. Its sanctum (garbhagriha) is located deep below the surface inside a rock-cut chamber. To reach it, one must descend several steps. Inside, about 10–12 feet below ground level, water continuously flows over the Shivlinga from the Gomukh.

Renovation During Holkar Period
After its ancient glory, the temple was revived and preserved in the 18th century by the devout ruler of Malwa, Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. She undertook the restoration of the temple, improving the water drainage, construction of steps, the sanctum stones, and kunds (sacred ponds) surrounding the temple.
