Located in the historic city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Vikram University is a prestigious educational institution named in honor of the legendary and just ruler Samrat Vikramaditya. Established on 1 March 1957, its foundation stone was laid on 23 October 1956 by the then Home Minister of India, Shri Govind Ballabh Pant, with the ceremony presided over by Jiwajirao Scindia, the Governor of Madhya Bharat. The land for the university was generously donated by Shri Ranchhod Lalji Dhabai from Barnagar.

History
In 1956, following the formation of Madhya Pradesh, the Vikram University Act No. 13, 1957 came into effect.
Initially, the university covered a vast region, but its jurisdiction reduced after the establishment of universities in Indore, Bhopal, and Gwalior.
In 1973, amendments were made to bring uniformity in the administration of all universities in Madhya Pradesh.

A New Chapter – Renaming of the University
In January 2025, during the 29th Convocation Ceremony, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Mohan Yadav, announced that the name of Vikram University will be changed to “Samrat Vikramaditya University”.
This decision aims to further strengthen Ujjain’s historical and cultural identity.
Once the official government notification is issued, the new name will be reflected in all documents, certificates, and the university’s official website.
