Ujjain, known since ancient times as the city of the Jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar, Kal Bhairav, and the legendary King Vikramaditya, is a priceless gem on India’s cultural and spiritual map.
Among its many jewels stands the Vikram Kirti Mandir — not just a temple, but a museum, research center, and cultural institution where art, literature, and history merge seamlessly.
The moment you step inside, you feel as though you’ve descended the stairway of time into the Vikramaditya era — a period of scholarly gatherings, poetic assemblies, and flourishing art.
History of Vikram Kirti Mandir – A Memorial to the Second Millennium of Vikram Samvat

Vikram Kirti Mandir was established in 1965 to commemorate the second millennium (2000 years) of the Vikram Samvat era.
Its purpose was to preserve and present the extraordinary governance, cultural patronage, and wisdom of King Vikramaditya for future generations.
King Vikramaditya was the pride of Ujjain, with great scholars like Kalidasa gracing his court.
This is why the site dedicates special attention to Kalidasa and the Sanskrit literary tradition.
Along with its inauguration, the Scindia Oriental Research Institute was founded here — an invaluable center of scholarship still active today.
