Ujjain, the eternal city on the banks of the holy Kshipra, is celebrated worldwide for the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Yet, this ancient town is also home to magnificent shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Among them, Shri Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir (popularly called Gopal Mandir) stands as the second largest temple in Ujjain, located in the heart of Patni Bazaar.
Here, Lord Krishna is worshipped in his Dwarkadhish (Lord of Dwarka) form. The temple is famous for its white marble sanctum, silver-plated doors, and above all, the unique tradition of Hari-Har Milan, a midnight ritual symbolizing the sacred union of Lord Shiva (Har) and Lord Vishnu (Hari).

History

The Gopal Mandir was built in the 19th century by Maharani Bayaji Bai Shinde (Baija Bai), the devout queen of Maharaja Daulat Rao Shinde of Gwalior. Known for her religious contributions and charitable works, she envisioned this shrine as a grand abode of Lord Krishna in Ujjain.
An interesting legend associates the temple’s silver-plated doors with the Somnath temple of Gujarat, which were looted by Mahmud of Ghazni and later brought back. While different historical versions exist, this link adds to the temple’s mystique and importance.

Architecture

The temple is a fine blend of Maratha architecture with Rajasthani influences. Built on a high plinth, its grandeur dominates the bustling bazaar around it.

Festivals and Rituals

Janmashtami – Celebrated with grandeur, featuring divine decorations, cultural programs, and midnight Krishna birth celebrations.
Hari-Har Milan (Vaikunth Chaturdashi) – The most unique tradition of Ujjain. At midnight, the procession of Lord Mahakaleshwar (Shiva) reaches Gopal Mandir, where the symbolic union of Shiva (Har) and Vishnu (Hari) takes place. This ritual lasts for over two hours, drawing thousands of devotees into its divine aura.
