Ujjain, known since ancient times as Avanti Nagari, is one of the holiest cities in India. It is counted among the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) that grant salvation. The city is home to the revered Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the most unique one. Its specialty is that it is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga, representing Mahakal, the тАЬLord of TimeтАЭ himself.
To accommodate the ever-increasing number of devotees and to give the temple a world-class divine form, the government envisioned the Mahakal Lok Corridor. Today, this corridor has become a symbol of UjjainтАЩs identity and pride.

The moment devotees enter Mahakal Lok, they are welcomed through the grand Nandi Dwar and Pinaki Dwar. Spanning nearly 900 meters, this corridor features 108 intricately designed pillars, magnificent sculptures, depictions from the Shiv Puran and Shiva Tandava, along with the serene beauty of Rudrasagar Lake. Together, they provide visitors with a one-of-a-kind spiritual journey.
Mahakal Lok today is not just a religious site, but a divine confluence of art, culture, and spirituality, attracting millions from across the globe.
History

The history of Mahakaleshwar Temple is ancient and deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. It is believed that Lord Shiva slew the demon Dushan at this very place, and from that time onward, the worship of Mahakal began here. Since antiquity, this has been one of the most important centers of Shaivism.
Over centuries, several rulers carried out renovations of this temple. UjjainтАЩs identity has always been intertwined with Mahakal. Emperor Vikramaditya made this city his capital, and the legendary poet Kalidasa described the glory of Ujjain in his works.
In modern times, with the rise in the number of devotees and the aim of presenting Ujjain on the global stage, the Mahakal Lok Corridor Project was initiated.
- The corridor was inaugurated on October 11, 2022, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The first phase of the project cost nearly тВ╣316 crore, with a total investment of about тВ╣856 crore.
- The temple complex, earlier spread across just 2.8 hectares, has now been expanded to 47 hectares.
- The second phase will further enhance facilities and cultural sites.
Thus, the corridor is not only a symbol of devotion but also a means of preserving and showcasing UjjainтАЩs glorious heritage and cultural traditions for generations to come.
