History

The history of Kaliyadeh Palace is fascinating. It was originally built in 1458 AD by Sultan Mahmud Khilji of Malwa. However, even before the palace existed, the site was home to a grand Sun Temple, which finds mention in the Skanda Purana. The sacred Surya Kund and Brahma Kund located here still stand as testimony to its mythological importance.
Over time, the palace witnessed both prosperity and decline. At one point, it was ravaged by the Pindaris. Later, in the early 20th century, Madhavrao Scindia restored and renovated it, reviving its grandeur. Historical records also mention that Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir visited the palace. Persian inscriptions on the walls still bear witness to their presence, highlighting the site’s political, cultural, and spiritual relevance.
